My Father’s Dragon

by Ruth Stiles Gannett

The story of a boy who sets out to rescue a baby dragon held captive on Wild Island, encountering various wild animals on the way. He is confronted with the challenge of how to escape and outsmart them in order to reach the captive dragon. Illustrations throughout which make this a good choice for a first chapter-book read-aloud. My 3.5 year old wanted to reread it the day after we finished 🙂

A little suspenseful for younger kids, but older ones will appreciate the adventure and humour. Note: it is the first book in a trilogy. I have not read the other two 🙂

  1. It sounds cute! But how to reconcile with Michael O’brien’s comment in A Landscape With Dragons that modern literature turns the symbols of evil into good and portrays dragons as cute or misunderstood? Is this a case of that or not? You’ll have to read the next two books and let us know how the worldview comes through 🙂
