Daisy Saves the Day

By Shirley Hughes

Have you ever told your kids, “You don’t realize just how blessed we are!” when they complain? Although this is not the point of the picturebook, the hard life of a young scullery maid in the early 1900’s in London will bring this message home. It’s a story that is cheerfully told, with equally cheerful illustrations. Well-researched details and accurate illustrations bring you right into a London home and lifestyle, and though there is not much to the plot, it is interestingly told and the drama half-way through involving red flannel underwear, as well as a kitchen fire will keep your kids’ attention!

Pictures are a big deal to me, and while I don’t love the illustration style, the details will help visualize the time period.

A great look at another place and time in history!
