Retold by Margaret Hodges
Illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman
If you are looking for a well-written, dramatic, adventurous fairy tale, this rendition of the classic “Saint George and the Dragon,” is very well-done. The illustrations which won the book a Caldecott Medal, are rich, lively, and colourful, and are given a medieval look with elaborate borders. The language of the story is also full of metaphor and imagery that will make young listeners sit on the edge of their seats.
An only objection would be the weird, sort of gothic, fairy-like creatures found on the front pages before the story begin, and in the small borders of another page or two.
