By Janell Cannon
Cannon is an author/illustrator who takes a different slant on the picturebook world. This is her first children’s book, and deals with a young bat that is separated from her mother. The story is quite touching, and readers will learn the habits of both baby birds and bats. There are many children’s books on diversity and friendship out there. I guess the draw of this book is that the author makes a point of choosing a typically un-cute, un-cuddly heroine. Accurate, realistic illustrations are by the author.
