by Jean Craighead George
Young Sam Gribley leaves his family’s overcrowded New York City apartment for the Catskill Mountains. Sam lives off the land, hunting with his falcon, Frightful, and living out in a hollowed out tree.
A slower paced, quite descriptive book, which I think would appeal to kids age 7 and up. The book switches between Sam’s journal entries and narrative. Kids will learn a lot about nature and survival skills while reading this coming of age story.
Sometimes humorous, sometimes suspenseful and always intriguing, My Side of the Mountain is a classic story which can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
(There are two more books that make up a My Side of the Mountain trilogy)
Appropriate for all ages, but likely best for 7+
