The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency

Product Details

Need a book to read on a hot summer day…with a cup of red bush tea?

Try THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGENCY. It was a slow start for me several years ago, but 14 books into the series later, I am still enjoying the main character’s insight into human nature. I love understanding the way people think, and I love the main characters reflections on life that remind you to slow down. Her assistant as well as the apprentice mechanics provide a dose of humour, and I think it’s a family trait that I can laugh about hypothetical events….did anyone else ever notice that Mma Ramotswe does this quite frequently? The downside is that the author portrays the main character as church-going, but she knows so little about true Christianity and faith. Once again, it’s a look into the hearts and lives of others and a learning experience…

I had to agree with these reviews from the library website:

“I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this book. The descriptions of Botswana make me want to travel there and the characters are so richly described that I feel like I know them.”

“I’ve had this book on my bookshelf at home for ages, and I finally picked it up last week. I thought it would be a fun summer read, simple and yet funny detective book. Though it was humorous and a great read, it was in no way simple or light. It tackled some of Africa’s darkest history from the racist and deadly South Africa mines to mistreatment of women. It was wonderful to read this book. The narrator is a witty and intelligent woman that you can’t help but love. I will definitely read the sequels, and I highly recommend this book to others.”

  1. The way to “read” this series is to listen to them on audio book. Get them from your library. If you are a speed reader like me, you will get much more from them this way. You will learn how to pronounce the names, and the mellifluous african accent just adds so much to the book.
